PROJECT SUMMARYWESTMEAD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SENSORY GARDEN_ The ClientWestmead Children’s Hospital. Scott Massey, head of Engineering at Westmead awarded the contract.Westmead Hospital in Northmead, Sydney NSW. Specifically, North Wing ‘redevelopment’ of the Hall ward playground area. The BriefTo brighten up the area and re design the space so that it was functional and inviting for the kids. The hospital had raised funds over many years through private donations and company donations to complete the revamp of the playground. The space was looking tired colour wise and functionally the area was not working. The basketball court did not have enough room and there was a large retaining wall down the centre of the courtyard that was affecting the movement of the kids. The project needed to be completed within 12 weeks. Solution & ApproachThe area was completely levelled and the original internal structure of the hall ward was removed. This allowed a blank canvas for the new composition created by Stuart Noble Design to be installed. Flooding was a problem so new concrete slabs were poured with the correct gradient so that the drainage worked properly. Murals were designed and painted onto the walls to brighten up the space, along with a mindfulness path where the kids could relax and allow themselves to feel calm. The garden is complete with fresh growing herbs and vegetables. The 400kg basketball hoop was in the wrong spot and was too close to one of the boundary walls. The hoop was successfully relocated into the middle area and professional line marking was put down. One of the biggest challenges was the access did not allow for any large machinery. The solution was for many hands to make light work along with pragmatic project management.
