The Brief

To create a compost area in the back garden.

The back garden (approximately 350m2) required a large compost area which at full capacity the hoppers are capable of holding 3m3 of green waste.

The compost is made up of green waste from the plant and lawn trimmings within the garden which are then composted down and used as organic matter and given back to the garden in nutrient form.

This process saves money for clients in the long term by reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers whilst also using the natural resources that are available instead of putting the green waste out in the rubbish collection. The process of composting mimics the earth's natural response to breaking down plant and animal bacteria, creating humus. The plants in your garden draw up these nutrients from the humus creating lush healthy gardens.

Solution & Approach

The approach was to design the area before installation. This meant that there would be minimal wastage of materials. Timber sleepers were used to build the skeleton of the structure. Posts were concreted in and the sleepers were fixed in with 150mm bugle head screws. Each individual hopper has decking boards at the front that has been inserted using stainless steel strips. These are designed to be lifted out and allows the client to fill up the compost heap with new green waste whilst also being able to remove the nutrient matter at the bottom of the compost.
